Archbishop Agostino Superbo, former leader of Potenza archdiocese, dies at 86

Monsignor Agostino Superbo died on 2 August 2026 at the age of 86 while hospitalized in Andria, Italy. He had been Archbishop Emeritus of the Potenza‑Muro Lucano‑Marsico Nuovo archdiocese.

Ordained a priest in 1963 for the Diocese of Andria, he was appointed bishop of Sessa Aurunca in 1991 by Pope John Paul II, transferred three years later to Altamura‑Gravina‑Acquaviva delle Fonti, and became Metropolitan Archbishop of Potenza in 2001, a post he held for fifteen years. He chaired the Basilicata Episcopal Conference, served as vice‑president of the Italian Episcopal Conference for southern Italy (2007‑2012), and retired in 2015. Archbishop Davide Carbonaro announced his death, recalling Superbo’s humility, balanced leadership and lifelong dedication to education and pastoral care.
