Archbishop Alick Banda summoned by Zambia's Drug Enforcement Commission

Archbishop Alick Banda of the Archdiocese of Lusaka has been summoned by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) regarding allegations of unlawful possession of a vehicle belonging to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

The investigation concerns a Toyota Hilux that was allegedly in the Archbishop's possession between April 2021 and December 2023. The DEC previously issued a formal warning in January after Banda reportedly declined to explain how he obtained the vehicle. The matter is being investigated under Section 319(a) of the Penal Code of Zambia.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka has expressed deep concern for the Archbishop's safety and well-being. In a statement, the Church called on clergy and the faithful to remain calm, united in prayer, and steadfast in their pursuit of truth and justice. A Holy Mass was scheduled at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus for September 28, 2026, to coincide with the Archbishop's appearance at the DEC.
