Archbishop Apostolos enthroned as new Archbishop of Canada in Toronto
Archbishop Apostolos was officially enthroned as the new Archbishop of Canada during a ceremony held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Toronto. The event was attended by high-ranking officials from both the Greek and Canadian governments, as well as members of the Orthodox community.
Representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain presided over the ceremony. The Greek government was represented by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki. Canadian political figures in attendance included Ontario Premier Doug Ford, former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
Archbishop Apostolos, who previously served as Metropolitan of New Jersey, was elected unanimously by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in July 2026. His leadership is expected to focus on building new bridges with the Greek diaspora, with a particular emphasis on engaging the youth and supporting Greek-language education in Canada.
