Archbishop Bentz describes catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza

Following a trip to Israel, Archbishop Udo Markus Bentz of Paderborn has reported a continuing catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Despite a formal ceasefire in place since October 2025, Bentz noted that essential aid deliveries are not being sufficiently permitted and life-sustaining goods have become unaffordable for many.

Based on discussions with representatives of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Bentz highlighted the growing distress as winter approaches. He noted that while a 20-point plan—facilitated with the help of US President Donald Trump—was agreed upon, key components such as the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Mediterranean coast have not yet been implemented.

Bentz also observed the resilience of the local Christian community in Gaza City, where priests and nuns continue to provide food, medical, and educational assistance with the support of the Latin Patriarchate. During his visit, he also met with victims of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks at Kibbutz Nir Oz.
