Archbishop Chomali calls for political unity and conditions human rights pardons

Cardinal Fernando Chomali, Archbishop of Santiago, has addressed the debate regarding potential pardons for individuals convicted of human rights violations during the dictatorship. Chomali suggested that any such measures should be termed “clemency” rather than “pardon” to avoid the impression of a “clean slate.” He emphasized that any benefit must be predicated on the recognition of past crimes, the expression of repentance, and the provision of information regarding the whereabouts of disappeared detainees.

In a separate address during the Te Deum Ecuménico, attended by President José Antonio Kast and other high-ranking officials, Chomali called for political unity and consensus to combat corruption, which he described as “the evil of all evils.” He also urged the state and employers to address demographic challenges, such as declining birth rates, by creating conditions that allow for a balance between family life and employment. Additionally, he highlighted the need to strengthen institutions to prevent violence and combat crime to protect democracy.
