Archbishop Domenico Battaglia marks ten years in Naples
Archbishop Domenico Battaglia of Naples marked the tenth anniversary of his episcopal ordination during a homily at the Naples Cathedral. Addressing the start of the new pastoral year, Battaglia focused his message on the importance of the younger generation, describing them as the “present of history” and the “thermometer of authenticity” for the Church.
Battaglia encouraged young people to believe in themselves and resist voices that suggest they do not belong or are wrong. He specifically highlighted the challenges faced by youth in Naples neighborhoods such as Sanità, Scampia, Forcella, and the Spanish Quarters, noting that many face difficulties including unemployment, lack of opportunity, and the influence of criminality.
Reflecting on his decade of service, the Archbishop described his experience not through milestones or balances, but through the faces and stories of the people he has encountered. He also touched upon the social issues observed during his ministry, including the depopulation of internal areas and the loneliness of the elderly.
