Archbishop Eamon Martin meets OpenAI to discuss AI ethics and papal encyclical

Archbishop Eamon Martin, the Primate of All Ireland, met with OpenAI executives in Dublin and later at his residence in Armagh to examine ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence. The discussions referenced Pope Francis’s calls for algorithmic transparency and the Vatican’s Rome Call for AI Ethics, as well as Pope Leo XIV’s newly issued encyclical *Magnifica humanitas* on safeguarding human dignity in the age of AI.

OpenAI representatives, including Emma Redmond and policy lead Derek Nolan, stressed the company’s commitment to ensuring advanced AI benefits everyone and respects human judgment. Both parties agreed that AI development should prioritize the common good, protect vulnerable populations, and be guided by moral principles rooted in Catholic teaching.

The meeting illustrates the Catholic Church’s effort to become a moral stakeholder in global technology policy, seeking to influence regulatory and industry standards toward greater transparency, bias mitigation, and respect for human rights.
