Archbishop Elpidophoros consecrates Greek Orthodox church in Alaska

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has conducted a historic visit to Anchorage, Alaska, to consecrate the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. This marks the first episcopal visit to this remote community in nearly half a century.

The Transfiguration of the Savior is the only Greek Orthodox parish in Alaska and serves as the northernmost parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Due to its geographic isolation, thousands of miles from major Greek communities in the United States, the parish has developed a close-knit congregation comprising members of Greek, Romanian, Ukrainian, and other backgrounds.

During the ceremonies, which began with a Great Vespers, Archbishop Elpidophoros stated that the consecration represents the beginning of a new era for the community rather than the conclusion of an effort. Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco also noted the diversity of the parish. During the service, Archbishop Elpidophoros bestowed the title of Archpriest upon the parish priest, Father Vasilios Hillhouse.
