Luján Pilgrimage draws 2.7 million as Archbishop calls for unity

Over 2.7 million people participated in the 52nd Youth Pilgrimage to Luján, a massive religious event that concluded with a central mass at the Basilica. During the ceremony, Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva delivered a pointed homily, warning that the wounds of intolerance, hatred, and social division are “infecting the heart of the Argentine people.” He called for national unity and fraternity, specifically urging support for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the unemployed, and people with disabilities.

The pilgrimage comes as Argentina prepares for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV in November. In anticipation of the papal visit, the Episcopal Conference has received over 20,000 volunteer applications, with registration closing on October 5. Meanwhile, tensions between the Church and the government persist regarding social issues. Representatives from the Church and the Ministry of Health recently met to discuss disability services, where Church leaders demanded concrete measures, including the payment of compensations and updates for service providers, stating that “gestures alone are not enough.”
