Archbishop Georgios calls for repositioning Cyprus issue as invasion and occupation
Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus has called for the repositioning of the Cyprus issue as a problem of invasion and occupation. Speaking in Paphos, he expressed the view that Turkey’s objectives extend beyond merely solidifying the status quo to the complete occupation of Cyprus.
The Archbishop emphasized the need for cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek diaspora, alongside the utilization of international alliances to mitigate the Turkish threat. He argued that continuous concessions cannot serve as a basis for resolving the dispute.
Furthermore, he highlighted the rights of Cypriot citizens as EU members, specifically regarding freedom of movement, settlement, and property rights. He warned that if concessions continue, the international community might simply adopt a stance of supporting whatever agreement is eventually reached between the parties, rather than upholding fundamental rights.
