Archbishop Luoma calls for concrete action on human dignity

Archbishop Tapio Luoma of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland is calling on political decision-makers to translate discussions regarding human dignity into concrete actions. His remarks come ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, emphasizing that the discourse surrounding the future of Finnish society must be precise and practical.

The Archbishop’s statements are based on the ‘Ihmisarvobarometri 2026: Hyvää yhteiskuntaa etsimässä’ (Human Dignity Barometer 2026: Searching for a Good Society) report, recently published by Diakonissalaitos. The report identifies a ‘human dignity deficit’ in Finland, noting that while there is broad consensus that a dignified life is important for everyone, there is a shared experience that such a life is not yet realized for every individual.

According to the report, Finnish citizens expect the state to maintain a central role in protecting those in vulnerable positions. Luoma suggests that this provides political parties, regardless of affiliation, with a strong mandate to promote the conditions necessary for human dignity. He has urged parties to outline specific measures they intend to take to uphold these values.
