Archbishop Pedro Vázquez Villalobos urges Oaxacans to reject greed and seek spiritual treasure

During a Sunday homily at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Oaxaca on July 26, Archbishop Pedro Vázquez Villalobos addressed the faithful gathered for the Guelaguetza festivities. He recalled Solomon’s request for wisdom and urged listeners to ask for spiritual insight rather than material wealth.

The prelate warned against the temptation of materialism, saying that money obtained through injustice, fraud or theft does not lead to true happiness. He called for generosity, stewardship, and a heart free from envy, encouraging the community to view wealth as a tool for good rather than a personal treasure.

He emphasized that true riches lie in a heart devoted to God and love for others, and urged parishioners to live with humility and compassion during the celebration of the Guelaguetza and beyond.
