Archdiocese of New York agrees to $800 million sexual abuse settlement
The Archdiocese of New York has reached an $800 million settlement to resolve legal claims brought by approximately 1,300 survivors of sexual abuse by clergy and lay leaders. The agreement, which follows more than seven years of litigation, is expected to be formally signed during the week of November 6.
Under the terms of the deal, each survivor will receive a minimum lump-sum payment of $250,000, with potentially higher amounts awarded based on the severity of the abuse. To prevent the settlement from being derailed by individual opposition, a $20 million fund has been negotiated for plaintiffs who choose not to accept the agreement.
Archbishop Ronald Hicks confirmed the development in an email to clergy, stating the agreement aims to bring “a measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors.” Attorneys for the plaintiffs noted that the settlement provides a significant step toward accountability, though they warned that rejecting the deal could lead the archdiocese to file for bankruptcy.
This settlement is the second-largest of its kind in the United States, following an $880 million agreement reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024.
