Arched House renovation wins Auckland architectural design award

The Arched House in Millwater has been recognized at the Auckland regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards. Designed by Shirong Zhang of Mulu Design Workshop, the project involved a renovation of a developer-built home from the early 2010s.

The renovation featured an interior redesign, a modest extension, and a new swimming pool. A key element of the design was a sculpted arched opening used to redefine the relationship between different areas of the home. The project also utilized softened interior corners, aligned openings, and a restrained color palette to improve natural light and the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Keryn Davis, chief executive of Architectural Designers NZ, noted that this year's Auckland entries demonstrated strong creativity and problem-solving in addressing lifestyle and site limitations.
