Archer Aviation and Anduril unveil hybrid‑electric autonomous VTOL platform Halo

Archer Aviation and defense technology firm Anduril announced a dual‑use autonomous VTOL platform that will be offered in two variants: the commercial Halo and the military Thunder. Both aircraft share a hybrid‑electric powertrain, dual tilt‑rotors and a modular payload bay, allowing long‑range, high‑speed flights while operating without a pilot. The hybrid system combines electric propulsion with fuel‑based generators to extend endurance and reduce noise, and the tilt‑rotor design optimises efficiency across cruise and hover phases.

Applications highlighted include offshore energy supply, rapid cargo transport between logistics hubs, humanitarian and medical missions, and maritime operations where runway‑free access is crucial. Archer cited eight years of eVTOL development behind the design. In Japan, Marubeni Aerospace was named the first strategic launch partner, focusing on market research and future adoption of Halo. The Thunder variant is positioned as a complement to manned attack and transport helicopters, offering greater range and lower acoustic signature than conventional rotorcraft.
