Archetyp Market operator confesses to running massive darknet drug marketplace
The alleged operator of the darknet marketplace ‘Archetyp Market’ has confessed to his crimes at the start of his trial at the Frankfurt District Court. The 31-year-old businessman, originally from Minden, admitted to founding and operating the platform, stating, ‘That was a big mistake and I deeply regret my actions.’
According to prosecutors, Archetyp Market was the world’s largest darknet marketplace for drugs and pharmaceuticals at the time of its shutdown in the summer of 2025. Founded in November 2020, the platform facilitated approximately 2.3 million orders through more than 600,000 customer accounts. Investigators estimate the total turnover reached roughly 330 million euros, with the defendant personally earning about 20 million euros using the cryptocurrency Monero.
The scale of the illegal trade included approximately 6.9 tons of drugs, 3.2 million pills, 2.2 million tablets, and 326 liters of various substances, including cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, fentanyl, and crack.
The defendant was arrested in June 2025 by the Spanish National Police in Barcelona. The investigation, supported by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), involved searches in multiple countries, and the platform's server infrastructure was reportedly located in the Netherlands.
