Architect Ramón Gutiérrez dies, leading Latin American heritage scholar

Renowned Argentine architect, historian and CONICET senior researcher Ramón Gutiérrez died on 23 July. He was dean of the Academia Nacional de la Historia and a member of Argentina’s Academies of History and Fine Arts. Gutiérrez co‑founded the Centro de Documentación de Arquitectura Latinoamericana (CEDODAL) with his wife, architect Graciela Viñuales, and directed the influential journal Documentos de Arquitectura Nacional y Americana. From 1975 to 2020 he served as a UNESCO consultant on architectural and urban heritage, helping to preserve documentation across Latin America and Spain. His prolific output includes more than 250 books and the creation of the Seminarios de Arquitectura Latinoamericana, which fostered regional scholarly exchange. Colleagues praised his scholarly rigor, dedication to heritage preservation, and his impact on Argentine and Ibero‑American cultural memory.
