Architects urge higher protection for Palazzina Vincenti in St Julian’s
The Kamra tal-Periti (Chamber of Architects) is calling on Malta’s Planning Authority to upgrade the scheduling of Palazzina Vincenti from Grade 2 to Grade 1. The organization argues that the current Grade 2 status allows for extensive internal changes that could jeopardize the building’s historical integrity, such as the potential demolition of its early waffle slab ceilings.
Designed by renowned architect Gustavo R. Vincenti as his personal residence, the building is considered one of the finest examples of Modernist domestic architecture in Malta. Key architectural features include limestone walls, long horizontal windows, semi-circular cantilevered concrete terraces, and a monumental marble-clad reinforced concrete staircase. The property also includes a tunnel connecting the house to the Balluta Bay foreshore.
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has previously described the property as one of Vincenti’s greatest masterpieces, noting its significance in the history of reinforced concrete usage in Malta. In addition to increased protection, the Chamber is urging the government to expropriate the building to transform it into a public space for community and cultural activities.
