Architectural developments in Bratislava and Plzeň
Recent architectural projects in Bratislava and Plzeň highlight a focus on blending historical character with modern functionality and integrating greenery into urban living.
In Bratislava’s Old Town, a 1930s apartment underwent a significant renovation to accommodate a modern couple. Architect Katarína Hrvolová and interior designer Martina Mičko transformed the original 3.5-room layout into a functional 3-room home. The design preserves historical elements such as high ceilings and original parquet flooring while introducing a new layout that moves the kitchen into a central living and dining area featuring a large island.
In Plzeň, a new 14-story residential building in the Bory district features a unique facade integrated with large planters that serve as railings. Designed by Jiří Zábran and Tereza Nová, the project aims to mitigate common housing estate issues by providing ample greenery, private outdoor spaces via continuous loggias, and integrated parking. The building’s design includes a specialized irrigation system within the railings and a surrounding landscape featuring concrete paving with circular openings for trees.
