Architectural heritage in Lithuania: Gothic Vilnius and Baroque Pažaislis

Lithuania features diverse architectural landscapes, ranging from the unique brick Gothic of Vilnius to the Italian-inspired Baroque of the Pažaislis Monastery near Kaunas.

In Vilnius, the Gothic style is characterized by the use of red clay bricks due to a historical lack of stone, creating a monumental yet warm aesthetic. Key landmarks include St. Anne’s Church, noted for its intricate facade. While many structures were later reconstructed in the Baroque style, original Gothic elements can still be identified through wall thickness and vault shapes.

Near the Kaunas Reservoir, the Pažaislis Monastery and Church represent a significant Baroque ensemble. Established in the 17th century by Grand Chancellor Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, the complex was designed by Italian architects and artists. The ensemble, which includes the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is known for its white facade, marble decorations, and frescoes depicting religious scenes.
