Architectural heritage preservation in Brazil

Historical architectural sites in Brazil are undergoing various forms of preservation and revitalization. In São Paulo, the ruins of Sítio Mirim in the Zona Leste serve as a significant historical site. Although the building is incomplete, its taipa walls and unique floor plan—featuring an extended porch and an irregular perimeter—offer insights into rural construction and land occupation prior to urban expansion. The site was listed by federal heritage authorities in 1973, despite ongoing debates regarding its exact construction date.

In Rio de Janeiro, Art Deco landmarks are being revitalized through retrofit projects. A notable example is the Edifício A Noite in Praça Mauá, designed by Joseph Gire. Originally inaugurated in 1929 as Latin America’s first reinforced concrete skyscraper, the building is being converted into a residential complex with 447 apartments and commercial spaces. This transformation is supported by the Reviver Centro program, a municipal initiative providing tax exemptions to encourage the conversion of commercial buildings into residential ones.
