Architectural innovation in Prague and Slovakia residential projects
Recent architectural projects in Central Europe highlight innovative approaches to residential living and urban space utilization.
In Prague, architect Matěj Šebek has completed the ‘Harfa’ project, a €1 million renovation of a century-old apartment building in the Vysočany district. Rather than a standard commercial development, the project added four new small apartments, including two maisonettes, to the building's roofline. The design preserves the original architecture by using recessed facades and large dormer windows that remain largely invisible from the street. The renovation also included updates to the courtyard facade, stairwell, and common areas, integrating a new elevator into an existing lightwell.
In a separate project, Slovak architect Martin Mikovčak has designed a modular home built into a hillside. The structure features a glass facade and a roof integrated into the landscape to allow meadow grass to grow over it. The interior is designed for high adaptability, utilizing multifunctional furniture that transforms between stairs, seating, and kitchen elements. During construction, a natural spring was discovered on the site, which now feeds a pond adjacent to the terrace.
