Architectural projects highlight historic building rehabilitations in Spain

Two distinct architectural rehabilitation projects in Spain have been highlighted, focusing on the preservation of historic structures through modern technical interventions.

In Valencia, Open House Valencia presented a new book titled “Campus Turia. Del mosaico Nolla a los nuevos espacios universitarios.” The publication documents the transformation of the former San Juan Bautista Asylum into the current campus for the Universidad Europea de Valencia. Designed by Ramón Esteve Estudio, the project involved adapting a 150-year-old building to meet contemporary university needs while preserving its heritage identity.

In Ortuella, Vizcaya, an energy rehabilitation project at the Camino de la Estación 86 building has successfully reduced energy consumption by 92% and CO2 emissions by nearly 90%. The 1902 building, which features protected facades and historical decorative elements, underwent improvements in insulation and airtightness. To maintain air quality without altering the protected exterior, a decentralized mechanical ventilation system from Soler & Palau was implemented, utilizing extractors and heat recovery units.
