Architectural renovations transform historic residential spaces in Spain
Two distinct architectural projects in Spain demonstrate the rehabilitation of historic structures into modern living spaces.
In Alcalá de Henares, Estudio Casabona has renovated Casa BC, a 93-square-meter apartment located within a 1960s military complex. The design preserves original elements such as textured walls (gotelé), checkerboard parquet, and exposed concrete. A central dark green terrazzo wall, repurposed from an existing installation and chimney structure, serves as the primary organizational element of the home, connecting the kitchen and dining areas.
In the Berguedà region of Barcelona, interior designer Laura Martínez has transformed Cal Moliné - Arrels, a 100-square-meter former stable in Avià, into a country house. The renovation focuses on maintaining the rural essence of the stone construction while addressing lighting challenges caused by the building's partially subterranean position. The project emphasizes a connection to the exterior landscape and the nearby river through reorganized window placements and the preservation of traditional stone facades.
