Architectural restoration projects focus on Dutch heritage and sustainability

Recent architectural projects in the Netherlands highlight the complexities of balancing historical preservation with modern sustainability and structural requirements.

In Amsterdam's Vondelparkbuurt, BNLA architecten completed the transformation of an aging mansion into a sustainable family home. The project involved extensive foundation repairs and the deepening of the basement to create an additional living level. To improve energy efficiency, the renovation included a timber-frame rear facade with high-grade insulation, vacuum glass in wooden frames, and a ground-source heat pump system.

Similarly, the restoration of the main building at Huis te Manpad focused on preserving its multi-layered history rather than reverting it to a single era. Architects Thomas Buijs of ATELIERFRONT and Bart Jan Onderwaater of Onderwaater Architecten Ingenieurs emphasized that the building's various construction phases, dating back to 1635, are essential to its narrative. The restoration addressed critical issues such as roof decay, moisture, and wood rot, while implementing customized solutions to modernize the monument for future use.
