Architectural strategies for optimizing compact residential spaces

Architectural approaches to compact living are focusing on maximizing functionality through strategic planning and multifunctional design. Architect Rosangela Pena utilizes techniques such as custom cabinetry, German corners, and camouflaged doors to enhance residential spaces. Her methods include integrating storage into staircases and using built-in benches to optimize floor plans.

In the Azores, SO Arquitetura & Design completed the Mini Atalhada project, an experiment in extreme compact living. Located in Lagoa on São Miguel Island, the project transformed a 13-square-meter storage building into a multi-level residence totaling approximately 35 square meters. To manage the limited footprint, the architects utilized vertical development and a specialized staircase made of perforated metal and timber to maintain light and sightlines throughout the narrow interior.
