Archivio di Stato di Napoli faces 600,000 euro mismanagement probe

Investigations by the Carabinieri's Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, the Ministry of Culture, and the Campania Regional Prosecutor of the Court of Auditors have uncovered significant mismanagement at the State Archives of Naples. The probe has identified an estimated financial loss to the state exceeding 600,000 euros.

The investigation was triggered by a viral social media incident in December 2024, involving a lavish wedding held within the historic halls of the complex. The event, which featured DJ sets, high-volume music, and smoke machines, raised immediate concerns regarding the preservation of the site's artistic and archival heritage. While inspections confirmed no physical damage to the assets, the incident prompted a deeper audit of all events hosted at the institution between 2021 and 2024.

Auditors discovered that various commercial, lucrative, or private events—including fashion shows, film shoots, and corporate meetings—were frequently granted use of the monumental spaces for free or at inadequate rates that did not align with ministerial tariffs and regulations. These authorizations were reportedly issued by the Archive's management despite failing to meet institutional requirements.
