Arcom warns of shifting funding in French audiovisual sector

The French audiovisual and cinematic landscape is facing a shift in funding as American streaming giants increase their presence. Martin Ajdari, president of Arcom, warned that Netflix is projected to become the primary overall funder of French audiovisual and film creation by 2030.

Data indicates that combined funding from platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max reached 525 million euros last year, representing a 32% increase from 2024. In contrast, funding from traditional French broadcasters, including France Télévisions, TF1, and Canal+, for domestic films and series has declined by 8%.

Arcom expressed concerns that the growing dominance of Hollywood-based services could weaken France’s ‘cultural exception,’ potentially leading to fewer filming hours, less diversity, and fewer funded works. While Canal+ has committed to investing 160 million euros in 2026 and 170 million euros in 2027, these figures remain below its 2018–2024 annual average of approximately 220 million euros.
