Arctic climate: Marine sugars influence cloud formation
Researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) have discovered that marine carbohydrates, or sugars, are being transported from the ocean into the Arctic atmosphere. These substances, produced by marine microorganisms, are lifted into the air via sea spray as wind and waves break up the surface of increasingly open Arctic waters.
Studies conducted near Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard utilized tethered balloons to collect aerosol particles at altitudes between 321 and 1112 meters. The findings, published in the journal ‘Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics’, revealed carbohydrate concentrations in the balloon samples ranging from 3.8 to 274 nanograms per cubic meter.
Scientists suggest these marine sugars could play a significant role in climate regulation by influencing the formation of ice crystals within Arctic clouds. This process may alter the clouds' radiation properties—affecting how much heat they retain or release—and impact regional precipitation patterns.
