Arctic glacier retreat may reveal new islands for Russia

Retreating glaciers in the Arctic may reveal previously unknown islands, potentially expanding Russia's territory. Researcher Andrey Leonov, who leads Arctic studies at Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, identified Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land as areas where new landmasses could emerge.

As climate change increases Arctic accessibility, Moscow is prioritizing the region for economic and strategic development. This includes expanding the world's largest icebreaker fleet to enhance navigation along the Northern Sea Route and preparing for future mineral extraction. The region also holds significant military importance due to its location along potential intercontinental ballistic missile flight paths.

Leonov noted that while new islands have been discovered before, these geographic features may not be permanent; some have previously become connected to the mainland via sandbars shortly after their formation.
