Arctic research mission studies ocean carbon absorption
Researchers are conducting missions to study how climate change is affecting the ocean's ability to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide. In the Arctic, specifically within the Greenland Sea, an international multidisciplinary team is investigating rapid changes in the oceanographic system. The mission aims to understand how these shifts impact the ocean's natural capacity to absorb CO2 and export it to deeper water layers, a process vital for regulating the Earth's climate.
Portuguese researcher Catarina Guerreiro is part of this expedition aboard the ship ‘Odón de Buen’. The study focuses on the role of the ocean as a regulator of greenhouse gas concentrations and how changing environmental conditions might alter this fundamental mechanism.
