Arctic scientists discover 1,000km warm Keldysh Current
Russian scientists have identified a new warm surface current in the Barents and Kara Seas, named the Keldysh Current after the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. Based on data from 25 expeditions spanning 30 years, the current transports large volumes of warm, salty water from the Atlantic Ocean into the Russian Arctic, significantly impacting the seasonal melting and freezing of sea ice.
The current extends over 1,000 kilometers from north of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago to the Laptev Sea, with a width of 50 to 100 kilometers and a depth of 50 to 100 meters. Researchers emphasize that this phenomenon must be factored into assessments of ice cover changes in the region.
This discovery coincides with increased interest in the Northern Sea Route as an alternative to disrupted maritime corridors. Russia is actively developing this 5,600-kilometer corridor, which connects northern ports to Siberian rivers. Recent developments include the South Korean vessel PanStar Acro completing a voyage to Europe in mid-August, and Chinese firm Sea Legend Shipping planning to launch a regular container line on the route. Cargo volumes on the route have already seen a 15 percent increase in the first eight months of the year.
