Arctic sea ice shrinks dramatically, losing area larger than Germany
New satellite analyses for the 2025‑2026 winter season show that Arctic sea‑ice cover has contracted far beyond a brief slowdown observed earlier in the decade. The winter‑growth phase (November‑January) lost about 0.72 million km² of ice—roughly twice the area of Germany—and the maximum phase (February‑March) shrank by another 0.93 million km², the largest seasonal declines recorded since satellite monitoring began.
Lead author Duo Chan of the University of Southampton warned that “short‑term improvements can temporarily hide the long‑term direction of Arctic sea‑ice change.” The study, published in *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences*, concludes that the recent dip in ice extent is a continuation of the long‑term warming trend, reinforcing sea ice as a key indicator of climate change in high latitudes.
