Arctic security: Experts link Northern Norway's industry to total defense

New reports emphasize the critical link between economic activity in Northern Norway and the nation's total defense capabilities. A memorandum from the Center for Sea and the Arctic at UiT The Arctic University of Norway provides ten recommendations to strengthen national preparedness by integrating maritime industries and coastal communities into the defense framework.

The document highlights that Norway's security in the Arctic depends on functional civilian sectors, including food supply, energy, transport, and digital infrastructure. Given the increased strategic importance of the Arctic, the report argues that military capacity must be supplemented by strengthening civilian infrastructure and local capacity to handle crises.

Simultaneously, NHO Arktis is seeking input from the business community to develop a Northern Areas Strategy. Regional Director Geir Håvard Hanssen noted that economic growth and preparedness are interconnected, as NATO requires functional energy, transport, and communication systems during crises. Current barriers to growth in the north include insufficient power and grid capacity, housing shortages, weak transport solutions, and lengthy public processes.
