Arctic tern performs record-breaking annual migration

The Arctic tern (Sterna parodiae) performs one of the most extraordinary migrations in the animal kingdom, traveling between the Arctic and Antarctica annually.

Geolocation data indicates that these birds, which weigh only about 100 grams, travel an average of more than 70,000 kilometers each year. Some individuals have been recorded traveling up to 96,000 kilometers per year. By alternating between polar summers, the species maximizes exposure to sunlight, which is essential for locating fish populations.

Given that Arctic terns can live for more than 30 years, their lifetime travel distance can exceed 2 million kilometers, an amount comparable to three round trips to the Moon. To navigate these vast distances, the birds utilize wind currents and environmental cues, including the position of the sun and the Earth's magnetic field.
