Arctic warming accelerates at three times the global rate

The American Meteorological Society’s annual report, ‘State of the Climate in 2025’, reveals that the Arctic is warming at approximately three times the global average rate. Satellite measurements from 1979 to 2025 indicate that human-driven emissions of heat-trapping gases are the primary driver of this change, which is further amplified by regional Arctic processes.

In 2025, both ocean and air temperatures in the region reached the second-highest levels recorded since 1900. The report also notes an upward trend in precipitation, with spring rain and snow amounts setting new records. These environmental shifts are causing biological changes, such as the northward expansion of shrubs and trees into new territories.

Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks noted that while specific areas like Alaska may experience localized cold periods, the broader pan-Arctic view shows dominant warming trends that create compounding hazards for terrestrial and marine landscapes.
