Ardahan and Artvin representatives call for Sahara Tunnel construction

Civil society organizations and political party representatives from Ardahan and Artvin have issued a joint call for the construction of the Sahara Tunnel. The project aims to pass beneath the Sahara Pass, which sits at an altitude of 2,470 meters and frequently causes transportation disruptions due to heavy snow and blizzards during winter months.

The proposed tunnel is intended to connect Ardahan to the Black Sea region and Artvin to the Eastern Anatolia region. Proponents argue that the project is vital for regional economic development, tourism, trade, and transportation security.

Candar Yılmaz, President of the Ardahan Chamber of Tradesmen and Craftsmen, emphasized that the demand represents the collective interest of merchants, drivers, farmers, and local residents. Representatives are calling on the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and other decision-makers to accelerate the necessary studies, investment programs, and tender processes to provide a concrete timeline for the project.
