Ardèche road crash kills five Rhône youths, families urge safety

On May 1, a group of friends from the Rhône department were traveling near Sarras in Ardèche when one of three cars left the D270 road, fell about 25 metres into a ravine and caught fire. The crash killed five occupants aged 16‑19 – Gregory, Yannick, Louis, Antoine and Paris – who lived in Saint‑Priest, Cailloux‑sur‑Fontaines and Pusignan.

Charline, the only survivor, had switched vehicles shortly before the accident and recalled warning the driver, saying “Stop, you’re going to kill us.” She later said, “I should have died with them.” The families, including Antoine’s mother Floriane, are now campaigning to warn young drivers about inexperience and a false sense of invulnerability, repeating the plea “Par pitié, arrêtez de vous croire invincibles.” The fire made identification of the victims difficult, delaying closure for the relatives.

The relatives hope their message will prevent similar tragedies among other groups of friends on France’s winding rural roads.
