Ardo Austria Frost to close Groß-Enzersdorf frozen vegetable plant

Ardo Austria Frost, a major producer of frozen vegetables, has announced plans to close its production and packaging facility in Groß-Enzersdorf, Lower Austria, by August 2027. The decision has caused significant concern for the local agricultural sector in the Marchfeld region, as approximately 500 farming businesses currently supply the plant with products such as peas, spinach, and carrots.

Local officials and the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture have expressed alarm over the impact on food security and the regional economy. The closure threatens more than 200 jobs and leaves farmers with specialized machinery that cannot be easily repurposed for other crops. While the supermarket chain Spar has indicated it will increase sourcing from the smaller local competitor, Schneider's Gemüseland, experts suggest this facility can only cover a small fraction of the volume previously handled by Ardo.

Political representatives are attempting to negotiate with the Belgian owners of Ardo to prevent the closure or secure a transition period. Proposals including lease models or the takeover of production lines have been discussed to maintain local supply chains and provide time to establish alternative structures.
