Ardo to close Groß-Enzersdorf plant, impacting Austrian agriculture

The frozen vegetable producer Ardo has announced the gradual closure of its production and packaging facility in Groß-Enzersdorf, Austria. While vegetable production is expected to continue until December, the company plans to decommission production lines and relocate equipment to other existing sites within Europe. The move is expected to result in the termination of approximately 190 employees.

The decision has caused significant concern within the Marchfeld agricultural region, where roughly 500 farms belonging to the Frozen Vegetable Producer Organization (ETG) rely on the plant as a central buyer. Local farmers face economic uncertainty due to heavy investments in specialized infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, that are tailored for frozen vegetable cultivation.

The Austrian Association of the Branded Goods Industry (MAV) has warned that this closure is a symptom of a ‘race to the bottom’ regarding pricing, where a focus on the lowest purchase costs undermines domestic quality and social standards. Meanwhile, the Lower Austria Chamber of Agriculture (LKNÖ) is seeking discussions with federal and state authorities to find ways to maintain domestic frozen vegetable processing capabilities.
