Ardo vegetable plant closure sparks debate in Lower Austria
The planned closure of the Ardo frozen vegetable plant in Groß-Enzersdorf has prompted discussions in the Lower Austrian Landtag. Political parties, including the ÖVP, FPÖ, and SPÖ, are seeking solutions to mitigate the economic impact on approximately 240 employees and 500 local farming businesses.
According to the FPÖ, around 40,000 tons of vegetables worth 18.5 million euros were delivered to Ardo last year. Many affected farmers have invested heavily in machinery and infrastructure specifically for this production chain. While the Belgian owner is proceeding with the shutdown, officials such as ÖVP representative Josef Edlinger noted that negotiations are ongoing with various parties to find a new operator for the facility.
Negotiations regarding a social plan for the workforce are also continuing. A company spokesperson confirmed that this year's harvest is expected to be fully processed, packaged, and partially stored into next year.
