Area 23 Salmon Harvest Roundtable promotes collaborative management model
A new documentary, The Round Table, highlights the collaborative fisheries management model used by the Area 23 Salmon Harvest Roundtable on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Established in 2005 to resolve historical conflicts between First Nations, commercial fishers, and recreational anglers, the group aims to move away from the zero-sum environment that characterized the region in the 1990s.
The roundtable facilitates weekly meetings during the spring and summer fishing seasons to make critical harvest decisions. This collaborative approach proved vital this past year when Sproat Lake experienced its lowest river flows on record. In response, the roundtable implemented conservative measures that exceeded standard Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) plans, prioritizing the movement of sockeye salmon into the lake by coordinating slowdowns among seine and gillnet fleets.
Representatives from the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations, along with commercial and recreational sectors, participate in these discussions to ensure sustainable resource use. West Coast Aquatic, which has facilitated the roundtable for five years, notes that the model is unique for its long-term success in fostering consensus among diverse stakeholders.
