Area 61 Secures Purchase of Former German Air Base

The municipal association Area 61 has signed a purchase contract for the former air base formerly owned by the Federal Real Estate Agency. The deal, announced by Penzing mayor Peter Hammer (CSU) and second mayor Manfred Schmid, covers 200 of the 270 hectares, with the remaining portion staying with the agency. A supplemental budget of €40 million was added to support the acquisition, putting the project on solid financial footing.

Final approval now awaits the Bundestag’s budget committee. Once confirmed, Area 61 will own the conversion area and plans to develop the site for civilian use, focusing on commercial space first and housing only after 12‑17 years. The project is part of a broader effort to repurpose former military sites amid changing security conditions linked to the Ukraine war.
