Arequipa candidates face scrutiny over heritage and safety platforms

As the 2026 regional and municipal elections approach in Arequipa, candidates are facing scrutiny regarding their platforms for heritage protection, public safety, and social services.

A Platform for the Protection of Heritage, comprising approximately 30 organizations, presented an agenda involving 115 specific actions for municipal and regional management. Only nine of the 20 invited candidates signed the commitment to protect Arequipa’s culture and historical center. Proposed actions include restoring the historical center, managing the Chili River urban basin, and elevating the current Culture Sub-directorate to a full Directorate.

Simultaneously, a study by Universidad Católica San Pablo highlights significant public dissatisfaction in the region. Survey data indicates low confidence in combating extortion and crime, poor satisfaction with air quality, and gaps in health and education services. While some candidates have pledged to complete stalled hospital projects and improve infrastructure, the lack of concrete proposals remains a central issue for voters.
