Arequipa elections show rise in political family clans
The upcoming regional and municipal elections in Arequipa, Peru, are characterized by a significant pattern of nepotism and the concentration of political power within family clans. In the absence of strong institutional leadership, various political organizations have fielded lists featuring spouses, children, siblings, and nephews of influential local leaders.
One prominent example is the Martínez family running under the Acción Popular banner. Former congressman and ex-mayor of Mariano Melgar, Edwin Martínez Talavera, is seeking a position in the Arequipa Regional Government. His candidacy is supported by several relatives, including his children Fiorella and Yordan Martínez Mogrovejo, his sister Esperanza Martínez Mogrovejo, and his nephew Cristopher Martínez Talavera. Martínez Talavera defended the practice, stating that his family’s participation was necessary to complete the party lists and ensure registration.
Another notable instance involves the Romero Peralta family, led by former provincial mayor Yamel Romero Peralta, highlighting the widespread nature of kinship networks in the current electoral landscape.
