Arequipa Governor criticized over delayed response to mudslides

Peruvian legislator Amalia Palomino has criticized the delayed response of Arequipa Regional Governor Rohel Sánchez following recent huaicos (mudslides) in various provinces. Palomino noted that the lack of immediate action left citizens without access to water, sewage, and food for six consecutive days.

In response, the legislator announced oversight actions to demand explanations regarding the delay in clearing blocked roads. The proposed investigation will review the management of the Regional Government, health facilities, and local municipalities. Palomino is also seeking to include the provinces of Camaná, Islay, and Caravelí in government contingency plans through emergency declarations.

To mitigate future effects of El Niño, Palomino proposed direct allocation of contingency funds to vulnerable communities, water reserves, and the relocation of homes in high-risk areas. Additionally, she suggested increasing state acquisition quotas for local micro-farmers to 50% to support rice producers and affected families.
