Arequipa taxi driver shot in the face by passenger over unpaid fare

A 69-year-old taxi driver, Clemente Huanqui del Carpio, was shot in the face in the Cercado district of Arequipa after a passenger refused to pay for a ride. The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, October 1, in the Las Orquídeas urbanization.

Following a verbal dispute and physical struggle over the fare, the assailant initially exited the vehicle but returned armed, firing a shot at close range that struck the driver in the face. Despite the severity of the wound, the victim managed to drive his vehicle to a nearby school to seek help. A police officer on school protection duty assisted him, driving him to the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital, where he was later transferred to EsSalud trauma-shock care.

The National Police conducted an operation following the attacker's escape route, locating a revolver discarded in the courtyard of a residence. Forensic experts confirmed the weapon belongs to Rodil Mamani Amachi, a native of Puno who holds a valid carry license.
