Aretha Franklin: The enduring legacy of the Queen of Soul

The legacy of Aretha Franklin, known as the ‘Queen of Soul’, continues to be celebrated following the anniversary of her passing. Franklin, who died in 2018 at the age of 76, left an indelible mark on music, culture, and social movements.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Franklin’s musical foundation was rooted in the gospel traditions of her father, Reverend C. L. Franklin. Her upbringing in a household that hosted both gospel legends and civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr., deeply influenced her artistry.

Throughout her six-decade career, Franklin transitioned from gospel to secular music, eventually becoming a symbol of both musical excellence and social progress. Her songs, including ‘Respect’, served as anthems for the civil rights and feminist movements. She also made history as the first Black woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
