Arfat Sheikh, award-winning filmmaker, detained by U.S. immigration
Award-winning Kashmiri filmmaker Arfat Sheikh has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. Sheikh was apprehended on September 24 at Washington Dulles International Airport while disembarking a flight from California.
Sheikh, 42, originally arrived in the U.S. in 2019 on a student visa to pursue film studies at Georgia State University and filed for asylum in 2020. While supporters and the ‘Free Arfat Sheikh’ campaign claim his detention is unlawful because he has a pending immigration application and authorization to work, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Sheikh “legally entered the US on a temporary basis and illegally overstayed his lawful admittance.” DHS added that a pending application does not confer legal residency status.
The detention occurs amid an intensified immigration crackdown by the Trump administration, which has aimed to identify and revoke visas for those claiming asylum after entering as short-term visitors. ICE reported record arrest levels this summer, with approximately 50,000 to 51,000 arrests recorded in July and August.
Sheikh is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Bowling Green, Virginia. His work, including the film ‘Saffron Kingdom,’ has received multiple international honors for its exploration of conflict in Kashmir.
