Romanian police intensify road safety checks, impose fines and restrictions

Police forces in several Romanian counties carried out extensive road‑safety operations in June. In Vrancea, officers inspected 125 sites, issued 110 fines and confiscated over 240 m³ of timber. Similar actions in Olt, Dâmbovița, Gorj, Brașov, Argeș, Bistrița‑Năsăud and Alba resulted in hundreds of alcohol and drug tests, dozens of driver’s licences withdrawn and penalties totalling roughly 200 000 lei.

Speed limits were temporarily reduced on the A7 motorway near kilometre 54, and traffic was restricted in multiple zones of Timișoara to allow infrastructure works. The government’s increase of the minimum wage to 4 325 lei from 1 July 2026 raised the standard fine for traffic offences – the lowest penalty is now 432.5 lei, the highest 4 325 lei.

The e‑SIGUR radar system continues to catch drivers trying to blame spouses for speeding, turning many minor violations into criminal cases. Together, these measures reflect a nationwide push to curb dangerous driving, alcohol‑related offences and speed violations.
